The program element “Open Design Region Linz and Upper Austria,” in short: OPEN DESIGN, fosters regional creative-economic initiatives that transfer open source principles and applications from the IT branch (i.e., free software such as Linux) to the development of processes, services or products in the field of design, thus experimenting with new business models for local crafts and regional commerce. Together with Kunstuniversität Linz, Otelo – Offenes Technologielabor, Open Commons Linz and Ars Electronica, the CREATIVE REGION offers platforms for the cultivation of this red-hot issue. Furthermore, important mediatory services are provided by workshops at festivals such as Bubble Days at Linz’s harbor, at schools such as HBLA für künstlerische Gestaltung Linz and in the context of cultural initiatives such as Kulturverein Röda at Steyr and Landinger Sommer at Hinterstoder.
The implementation of exemplary product and fashion design projects is meant to facilitate easy access to the world of open design, to stimulate general discourse around working with creative commons licences and to contribute to extending the open design product range. Accordingly, blueprints for the products commissioned by the CREATIVE REGION— the furniture series “Binder Family”, the “Noin”-bags, the “Concrete”-stool as well as the backpack “copycat <3 backpacks” – are freely accessible on the Internet.
